Zenith Bank Plc has appointed Dr. Adaora Umeoji, a distinguished banker, as its new Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, making her the first woman to hold this position in the bank’s history.
The announcement of Umeoji’s appointment came through a statement signed by the company’s secretary, Michael Otu, and filed with the Nigerian Exchange Limited.
Effective June 1, 2024, Umeoji will assume her new role, succeeding Dr. Ebenezer Onyeagwu, whose term as the current GMD concludes on May 31, 2024.
“Dame (Dr) Adaora Umeoji is the first female GMDCEO since the inception of the bank, and her appointment is consistent with the bank’s executive transition tradition, succession plan, and strategy of grooming leaders from within,” part of the statement read.
The statement emphasized Umeoji’s historic appointment, highlighting her long-standing tenure with Zenith Bank and her alignment with the institution’s ethos of nurturing leaders internally.
Prior to her elevation, Umeoji served as the Deputy Managing Director of the bank since October 28, 2016, accumulating nearly three decades of banking experience, with the majority of her tenure spent at Zenith Bank.
Her educational background boasts accolades from prestigious institutions worldwide, including Harvard Business School, Columbia Business School, University of Jos, Baze University, University of Salford, University of Calabar, and Apollos University.
Moreover, Umeoji’s professional development extends to renowned management programs across the globe, including the MIT Sloan School of Management and Wharton Business School.
