As the 2021 Grammy night looms, controversies also loom. This time, the controversy involves The Weeknd. The three-time winner has decided on boycotting the prestigious award ceremony after the snub received by his hit single ‘Blinding Lights.’
The song has been in the Top 10 for one year on the Billboard Hot 100 and bagged no nomination in any category, something that forced the Canadian pop star to boycott the Grammys.
In a statement released to The New York Times, the talented musician said that he would no longer allow his label to submit music to the Grammys “because of the secret committees.”
The Weeknd had earlier tweeted against the Recording Academy and said: “The Grammys remain corrupt.” In his subsequent tweet, he expressed disappointment, saying he went from planning a Grammys performance to being “not invited.”
With his current decision to snub the ceremony and other future events, The Weeknd joins the league of Black stars like Frank Ocean, Drake and Kanye West who have all had same views about Grammy Awards in the past.
In his reaction reacting to The Weeknd’s statement, Harvey Mason Jr, Grammys’ interim president, said when everyone is upset, we are all “disappointed. But I will say that we are constantly evolving.”
While talking further, he said the organisers will take a hard look at “how to improve our awards process, including the nomination review committees.”
