After many years of battling smoky wildfires in Ontario and B.C., firefighters have raised concerns over the long-term effects of smoke exposure on their health. The physical demands of firefighting and persistent smoke inhalation have taken a toll on their bodies.
A lot of firefighters have discovered the lingering effects of acute smoke exposure, including waking up to a “smoke hangover” and encountering respiratory issues. Despite the hazards, firefighters reveal they were never equipped with adequate respiratory protection, and designing suitable masks for the challenging conditions of wildland fires poses a major challenge as the challenging conditions of wildland fires, including physical exertion, branches hitting the face, wet and sweaty environments, as well as long working hours, make it hard to get suitable masks that can provide a tight seal and cope with the demands of firefighting.

Firefighters are uncertain about whether existing masks would be effective in wildfire conditions and have asked how feasible it is to design specific masks for wildland fire situations.
