Barbudans, fighting against what they deem as “ethnic cleansing” by developers transforming their island into a playground for the super-rich, have rallied in a London court. The case, seen as a potential game-changer for Caribbean locals denied access to their beaches, involves the unfair denial of the right to challenge the construction of a private airport catering to the wealthy.
Allegations include police visits to a local marine biologist, John Mussington, who questioned the destruction of untouched forest, and intimidation faced by UK lawyers during a fact-finding visit. The developers, backed by billionaires and boasting billion-dollar investments, face accusations of obtaining retrospective planning permission and neglecting environmental impact assessments.
The court heard concerns about the threat to rare wildlife, including the Barbudan Warbler and Red Footed Tortoise, while locals fear being displaced from their island. Despite claims of multi-millionaires building for celebrities like Prince Harry and Meghan, the battle is underscored by the ominous shadow of exclusion, privatization, and the destruction of cultural and environmental resources.
In the face of what is labeled as “disaster capitalism,” Barbudans, supported by lawyers working pro bono, seek justice. The outcome of this pivotal case before the Crown’s Privy Council may influence the fate of other Caribbean communities, echoing the urgent need to resist the encroachment of developers and preserve the essence of their islands.
