In a historic election, Nadia Mohamed, a 27-year-old Somali-American, has been elected as the mayor of St. Louis Park, Minnesota. She secured a significant victory, becoming the city’s first Black, first Somali, and first Muslim mayor. Mohamed’s win marked a notable moment in American history, as she became the first Somali mayor elected directly by voters.
Having moved to St. Louis Park as a refugee at the age of 10, Mohamed emphasized her long-standing connection with the city. Her political journey began in 2019 when she was elected to the St. Louis Park City Council at the age of 23, making her the youngest individual to hold that position in the city’s history.
The election results highlighted Mohamed’s widespread support, as she secured 58% of the votes, defeating her opponent, Dale Anderson, by a significant margin. St. Louis Park, with a population of around 50,000, has witnessed a growing diversity over the years, with people of color now constituting 20% of the population.
Nadia Mohamed’s achievement adds to the success of Somali-American candidates in U.S. elections. The broader Somali-American community has seen increasing representation, with individuals like Mohamed making significant strides in local politics. Her election serves as a testament to the changing face of leadership in American cities and the increasing diversity within elected offices.
