The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has appealed to Western countries, particularly the United States, to lift the economic embargo imposed on Cuba, emphasizing the need for a new global economic order.

The NLC urged the Nigerian government to lobby Western nations to end the embargo in the spirit of global democracies.

During the receipt of a Friendship Medal from the Government of Cuba, awarded in recognition of the NLC’s support and solidarity, President of the NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero, stressed the necessity of lifting the economic ban on Cuba.

He asserted that Cuba should be allowed to participate in global markets to leverage its comparative and competitive advantages for the benefit of the entire world.

Ajaero expressed the NLC’s commitment to continue appealing to the Nigerian government and international bodies to exert pressure on the West to lift the economic restrictions on Cuba.

He highlighted the challenges faced by Cuban embassies globally, where economic policies and global conspiracies hinder the opening of accounts.

The NLC president also acknowledged the friendly manner in which the Cuban Embassy handles issues affecting the NLC. He recounted a specific instance where the Cuban Ambassador showed concern for challenges faced by the NLC in Imo state.

In the award citation signed by the President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, the Friendship Medal was granted to the leadership of trade unions for their support in strengthening and deepening the links with the Cuban people.

The recognition is based on brotherhood, solidarity, and cooperation at both political and labor levels, contributing to excellent historical relations with the Cuban trade union movement.
