According to reports, the Canadian government has updated the travel advisory for its citizens in India and urged them to “stay vigilant and exercise caution” after recent developments as there are calls for protests and some “negative sentiment” towards Canada on social media.
In an update, the Canadian government said: “In the context of recent developments in Canada and in India, there are calls for protests and some negative sentiment towards Canada on social media. Please remain vigilant and exercise caution.”
The update came after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of its involvement in the killing of a Canadian citizen who was wanted for many years by authorities in the country.
Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar was killed outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, B.C., a Vancouver suburb with a high Sikh population. Before his death, Nijjar was a popular member of a political movement that was formed to establish an independent Sikh homeland known as Khalistan. He was working with the group Sikhs for Justice to organize an unofficial referendum among the Sikh diaspora at the time of his death.

Trudeau demanded India’s help for investigation before revealing there were “credible allegations” implicating the government of India in the killing. Canada later expelled an Indian diplomat.
India described the allegations as absurd and retaliated by expelling a Canadian representative.
Also, the government of India halted every visa service for Canadian citizens and urged Indian citizens in Canada to be cautious over “growing anti-India activities and politically-condoned hate crimes and criminal violence” here.
The travel advisory read: “Given the deteriorating security environment in Canada, Indian students in particular are advised to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant.”
Sikh activists are however urging the diaspora in Canada to converge outside Indian embassies in protest of the killing.
