In a historic upset, Namibia secured its first-ever victory in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) by defeating Tunisia 1-0 in the ongoing AFCON in their first-group match.
Namibia, appearing in its fourth AFCON, had previously been unsuccessful in its nine final matches, losing seven and drawing two. The southern African nation, ranked 115th in the world and 87 places below Tunisia, claimed the victory with a late 88th-minute goal from midfielder Deon Hotto.
Hotto’s decisive header not only marked Namibia’s historic triumph but also ignited jubilant celebrations on the bench and in the stands. The 33-year-old player leapt over advertising hoardings to share the joy of his goal with enthusiastic fans.
This unexpected result adds to the series of surprising outcomes in the AFCON tournament hosted in the Ivory Coast. Notably, Ghana suffered a 2-1 defeat in stoppage time against Cape Verde in their first match. In other matches, Egypt required a last-minute penalty from Mo Salah to salvage a draw against Mozambique, while Algeria, Cameroon, and Nigeria were held to draws in matches where they were heavily favored.
Despite being the No. 1 seed in Group E and a former AFCON champion in 2004, Tunisia now faces a challenging path to advance to the knockout stages, with upcoming matches against Mali and South Africa. Namibia, buoyed by its historic victory, looks forward to facing South Africa in the next fixture.
The unpredictable outcomes in the tournament continue to captivate football fans and set the stage for further excitement.
