The Qatari royal family are requesting a total ban on alcohol sales at every World Cup stadium, just two days before the tournament starts.
Qatar, a country where alcohol sales are normally restricted to foreigners drinking in licensed hotels and restaurants, or non-Muslim residents with special permits in their houses, has asked FIFA to stop the selling of beer at the eight World Cup stadiums.
If the ban takes effect, Budweiser – one of the tournament’s biggest sponsors – will not be able to sell its beer to fans during the matches and could place FIFA in breach of a multi-million dollar contract with the company.
Discussions are ongoing over the issue between Budweiser and FIFA, though The Times says the ban of sales of Budweiser is ‘likely’ after the intervention of Qatari royals intervened.
According to The New York Times reported that this order was made by Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, the brother of Qatar’s ruler.
