Calgary-based airline, WestJet, is offering customers the option of receiving refunds for their scheduled weekend flights amid the looming strike threat from its pilot union. In a recent statement released, WestJet announced a one-time fee waiver for cancellations or changes to flights till Sunday and cautioned that altering the destination might result in extra charges.
This one-time fee waiver initiative from WestJet came shortly after the pilots’ union released a strike notice. While responding, the airline revealed its intention to lock out the pilots, starting from 3 a.m. on Friday. About 1,850 pilots affiliated with the union are warming up for strike just before the looming May long weekend, which will impact WestJet’s flight schedules and those of Swoop, its subsidiary.
Before the implementation of the waiver, some WestJet passengers had already incurred expenses by arranging alternative flights. Jason Duggan, who recently travelled with his daughter from Ottawa to Calgary, spent around $700 on backup flights with two airlines. Understanding the complications that would come with a strike, Duggan decided to pay the extra cost, as he wanted to avoid being stranded without any option.

In the same vein, John Sedor, who booked a WestJet flight to Winnipeg and another flight to Edmonton the following week, opted for alternative travel arrangements with Air Canada. He adduced the unpredictable nature of the situation as his reason for taking the proactive approach.
WestJet is helping its customers by offering refunds for scheduled flights during the strike period. This gesture seeks to offer passengers with flexibility and peace of mind as they find their way around the uncertainty caused by the looming strike threat.
Passengers who choose to cancel or alter their flights until Sunday will not pay any additional fees as a result of WestJet’s one-time fee waiver. Though changes in destination may result in extra charges, the airline wants to alleviate the financial burden and make it easier for customers to make informed decisions about their travel plans.
