The Vice President of Zimbabwe, Kembo Mohadi, has resigned after facing allegations of sexual misconduct.
This happened after audio recordings of different phone conversations where Mohadi was allegedly requesting sex from married women including his subordinate in the office was posted online in February.
The audio recordings included one where a man was arranging sex meeting in his office.
In an uncommon move by any public official in Zimbabwe, Mohadi disclosed he took the decision to step down “not as a matter of cowardice but as a sign of demonstrating great respect to the office of the President.”
In a statement released by the Ministry of Information, Mohadi said: “I have been going through a soul-searching pilgrimage and realised that I need the space to deal with my problem outside the governance chair.”
The 70-year-old politician however denied the accusations recently and said it was part of a political plan against him and added that he would seek legal recourse.
Mohadi is a retired soldier and a major force of the Zimbabwe’s liberation war. He served in many ministerial positions under former President, Robert Mugabe, and became Vice President in 2017 after Mugabe was ousted from office.
