Usain Bolt Loses Life Savings, By Stanley Ugagbe

Jamaican sprinter, Usain Bolt, has revealed he is shocked over how $12.7 million of his money disappeared from a local private investment firm that is being investigated by authorities as part of a massive fraud.

While speaking to reporters recently, Bolt said he has sacked his business manager and added that it was not an amicable split.

When asked if he was “broke,” he laughed.

He said: “I’m not broke, but it’s definitely put a damper on me. It was for my future. Everybody knows I have three kids. I’m still looking out for my parents, and I still want to live very well.”

Bolt’s attorneys said his account with Kingston-based Stocks and Securities Limited reduced from around $12.8 million to $12,000. They gave the company until January 27 to return the money or face civil and criminal action.

While talking to Jamaica Observer, Attorney Linton P. Gordon said the public should anticipate the “expected and the unexpected” in the case.

He said: “There is nothing to say at this stage, given what is happening. We have met with persons, and we are dealing with certain matters.”

Jamaican Finance Minister Nigel Clarke announced few days ago that the director of the Financial Services Commission would step down and that the Bank of Jamaica would now be in charge of regulating the financial system of the Island.

He said many government agencies and elderly customers were also affected by the alleged fraud.

While sympathizing with the elderly who were affected by the fraud, Bolt said: “It’s always a sad situation. Definitely disappointed.

“Everybody’s confused. … I’m as confused as the public.”

Jamaican authorities have asked for help from the FBI and other unidentified international experts, adding that customers were given false statements in respect of their balances as part of the alleged fraud. Officials have not revealed how many clients overall were affected and how much money is missing.
