The State Department has announced that the government of United States has revoked visas of over 1,000 Chinese students and researchers under a directive issued by President Donald Trump which accused some of them of espionage and working for China.
As tensions rose between Beijing and Washington on many fronts, Trump, in a proclamation on May 29 declared that some Chinese nationals officially in the United States for study have illegitimately acquired intellectual property and aided the modernization of China’s military.
The State Department has for the first time released figures on the effects of Trump’s order and stated that over 1,000 visas have been revoked since its implementation on June 1.
While talking about the development, a spokesperson for State Department said: “The high-risk graduate students and research scholars made ineligible under this proclamation represent a small subset of the total number of Chinese students and scholars coming to the United States.
“We continue to welcome legitimate students and scholars from China who do not further the Chinese Communist Party’s goals of military dominance.”
Also, the State Department accused some of the students and researchers of pilfering research information from American scientists that are working on developing covid-19 vaccine.
Around 370,000 students from China enrolled at US Universities between 2018 and 2019 and that happens to be the most from any country in the world.
