The United States has stated that the recently concluded presidential election in Nigeria where Bola Tinubu emerged winner did not meet the expectations of its citizens.
Nigerian Canadian News confirmed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner of the election with 8,794,726 votes, while Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) came in second with 6,984,520 votes.
On the other hand, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and Peter Obi of the Labour Party have condemned the election and plan to challenge the results in court.
In a statement, US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard, expressed her dissatisfaction, stating that “the electoral process as a whole on February 25 failed to meet Nigerians’ expectations.”
Leonard commended Nigerians for their commitment to democracy, but urged them to avoid division and allow the legal process for resolving election challenges take its course.
Also, she urged INEC to quickly tackle the challenges ahead of the March 11 governorship elections and undertake a broader review of the issues that happened during the last elections.
