Unimpressive Belgium Defeat Canada In World Cup Opener

Canada’s 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign started with an undeserved 0-1 loss against Belgium.

The result put the Red Devils on top of Group F and Canada in last place after the first round of fixtures.

However, those positions could have changed if the Canadian team took just a few of the chances they created.

Canada ended the game with 22 shots – 13 above Belgium – but none of them entered the net.

As a matter of fact, only four shots called Belgium’s goalkeeper, Thiabout Courtois, to action including an 11th-minute penalty that was saved by the keeper.

Belgium looked unorganized and sluggish for the most part of the match at Ahmed bin Ali Stadium.

But they made their way through the Canadian defence before half-time when a long pass from Toby Alderweireld found Michy Batshuayi, who scored with his left foot.

Belgium still struggled in their efforts to dominate the game in the second half but they did just enough to defend the one-goal lead.

After the match, the Head Coach of Belgium, Roberto Martinez, admitted in his interview with BBC Sport that they were not the better team.

Canada’s next match against Croatia is a must-win match, as such, the team need to be more clinical to avoid a repeat of what happened today.
