Ugbo, Adekugbe Make Canada’s 26-Man World Cup Squad

Ike Ugbo and Samuel Adekugbe have been named in Canada’s squad for the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Ugbo was born in Lewisham, Greater London, to Nigerian parents. He relocated to Canada with his family when he was around five years old.

The 24-year-old was eligible to represent Nigeria, England and Canada.

He represented England at the youth level but announced that he had decided to change his international allegiance to Nigeria in September 2021.

He however switched his international allegiance to Canada two months later. He made his international debut for Canada in the match against Costa Rica on 12 November when he appeared as an 83rd-minute substitute.

Samuel Adekugbe, another Nigerian-born player who made the squad, is a 27-year-old defender with the Turkish Super Lig club, Hatayspor.

Adekugbe was born in London to Nigerian parents and migrated to Canada with his family at the age of 10.

He received his first call-up to the Canada senior team and made his debut two years later in a match against Belize on September 8, 2015.

Canada is in Group F with Belgium, Croatia and Morocco.
