Two Liberal MPs have tendered their resignation from their government and House of Commons roles after they admitted to traveling overseas recently in spite of strict travel restrictions put in place by the government owing to the spread of COVID-19.

According to the Chief Government Whip’s statement, Pierrefonds—Dollard MP, Sameer Zuberi resigned from several committee roles while the representative of Brampton West, Kamal Khera, resigned as parliamentary secretary to the Minister of International Development.

In a recent tweet, Khera revealed that she traveled to Seattle to on December 23 to be part of a private memorial for her late uncle and returned on December 31.

Part of the statement read: “Although the purpose of my travel is deemed essential given the circumstances, I have decided to step aside from my duties … in an effort to ensure my choices do not distract from the important work of our government to continue battling this pandemic.”

An official statement from Zuberi revealed that he recently traveled to Delaware to see the sick grandfather of his wife and returned on Dec. 31.

Part of Zuberi’s statement read: “I recognize that travel during this period, when so many are limiting interactions with loved ones, was an error in judgement. As a result, I will be stepping down from my committee roles.”

These resignations came at a time when revelations about Canadian politicians and recent holiday travel are emerging.
