Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will meet with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith today in Calgary, among other stops in the city as Stampede season commences.
During the meeting, Trudeau and Smith are expected to talk about many issues including emission reductions and the aim of the federal government to have a net-zero electricity grid by 2035.
Prior to a meeting with the federal ministers of natural resources and intergovernmental affairs, Smith said, Ottawa’s 2035 target wasn’t realistic for Alberta without a great cost to the economy and jobs.
Canada and Alberta are seeking to be net zero by 2050, but the federal government has multiple earlier targets in the pipeline.

Another target would witness emissions from the oil and gas sector reduced by over 40 per cent by 2030.
Smith says she is hopeful that a “breakthrough” will take place between the province and the country.
