Transport Minister Omar Alghabra has revealed he has decided not to contest in Canada’s next election and will be resigning as a result.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to shuffle his cabinet as soon as July 26 and Ministers that are not planning to run in the election, expected in the next two years, are set to resign.
Carolyn Bennett, a lawmaker who was Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, and Procurement Minister Helena Jaczek have also stated that they won’t seek re-election.
Alghabra has been Minister of Transport minister since January 2021, leading the government’s response to COVID-19 at airports and a period of chaotic lineups as well as delays when Canadians resumed travelling regularly.
In a brief video statement posted on social media, Alghabra said he was proud to have worked on reforming Canada’s aviation sector during an “extraordinary time” by enhancing transparency and accountability.
Trudeau’s imminent Cabinet shakeup comes as a pileup of political controversies and the increasing cost of living make him prone to attacks by his major opposition rival.
