The government of Nepal has banned the famous social media app, TikTok on the grounds of disrupting “social harmony” in the country.
The announcement was made after a Cabinet meeting by Foreign Minister Narayan Prakash Saud who said the app would be banned immediately.
Saud said: “The government has decided to ban TikTok as it was necessary to regulate the use of the social media platform that was disrupting social harmony, goodwill and flow of indecent materials.”
He said in a bid to make social media platforms accountable, the government has asked social media platforms to register and open a liaison office in Nepal, pay taxes and abide by the country’s laws and regulations.
TikTok has encountered scrutiny in some countries over concerns that China could use the app to harvest user data or promote its interests. Countries like the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand have banned the app on government phones despite TikTok constantly denying that it has ever shared data with the Chinese government and would never do so.
In 2018, Nepal banned all pornographic sites.
