Wameed Ateyah, a former doctor practising in a village north of Toronto, has been sentenced to nine years in prison for sexually assaulting patients between 2008 and 2017, as confirmed by York Regional Police. The 52-year-old Ateyah, who practised in Schomberg, Ontario, received his sentence on November 23, which includes less than five days of pre-trial custody.
Ateyah was found guilty in September of multiple counts of sexual assault and one count of sexual exploitation. The investigation into his actions began in August 2020 when two women, aged 49 and 28, reported to the police that they had been sexually assaulted during visits to the Schomberg Medical Centre.
Further examination revealed that these incidents occurred between 2008 and 2017. Subsequently, additional victims emerged following the initial investigation, leading to further charges against Ateyah. As part of his sentence, he is required to submit a DNA sample to the National DNA Data Bank.
This case follows a series of disturbing events, highlighting the importance of addressing and penalising such misconduct within the medical profession. The severity of the sentence underscores the commitment to ensuring justice for the victims and maintaining the integrity of the medical field.
