Theresa May Vows to Exit Parliament Ahead of Upcoming Election

Former British Prime Minister Theresa May has announced her decision to step down as a Member of Parliament once an election is called later this year, drawing the curtains on her 27-year-long parliamentary career. Her tenure, which included three years at the helm of the nation during the tumultuous period of Brexit, will come to an end, marking a significant transition for British politics.

In an interview with her local newspaper, the Maidenhead Advertiser, Ms. May cited her increasing commitment to combating human trafficking and modern slavery as a reason for her departure from parliamentary duties. She expressed a realization that she wouldn’t be able to fulfill her responsibilities as an MP in the manner she deems appropriate and deserving for her constituents.

The 67-year-old has represented the Maidenhead constituency, situated west of London, since 1997. Prior to her tenure as prime minister, she held various government positions, including serving as Home Secretary from 2010 to 2016. Ms. May’s leadership was defined by the aftermath of the Brexit referendum in June 2016, which ultimately overshadowed her premiership. Her inability to secure parliamentary approval for the Brexit deal led to her resignation as Conservative Party leader and prime minister in 2019.

Throughout her career, Ms. May also navigated tense relations with former U.S. President Donald Trump, who openly criticized her handling of Brexit. Despite the challenges, she remained engaged in parliamentary affairs as a backbench legislator, while successive Conservative leaders grappled with the complexities of Brexit, often offering public critiques of their approaches.

Acknowledging her service, current Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak praised Ms. May, stating that she epitomizes the essence of public service.

The upcoming election, which Mr. Sunak must call by the end of the year, holds significant implications for British politics. With polls indicating a trailing position for the Conservatives behind the Labour Party, the electoral landscape suggests a potentially transformative period ahead.
