The 2020 MTV Video Music Awards was held recently with performances that were streamed from different locations in New York City owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The event was hosted by Keke Palmer from an outdoor set close to the Empire State Building. Palmer kicked off the ceremony with a pre-recorded video that paid tribute to Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman, who died recently at the age of 43 after a protracted battle with colon cancer. While talking about Boseman, Palmer said he is “a true hero. Not just on screen, but in everything he did.”
Lady Gaga led the event with nine nominations and received awards for artist of the year, song of the year, best cinematography and best collaboration for Rain on Me and the inaugural Tricon award that recognizes an artist who accomplished high across no fewer than three disciplines.
During her acceptance speech, Lady Gaga said: “Just because we’re separated right now, and culture may feels less alive in some ways, I know a Renaissance is coming. Stay safe, speak your mind, and I might sound like a broken record, but wear a mask — it’s a sign of respect.”
Famous Canadian musician, The Weeknd, received two awards, “Video of the Year” and “Best R&B” awards. While receiving his awards, the proud Canadian dedicated his awards speeches to justice for Jacob Blake and Breonna Taylor.
