The humour of God against His enemies, by Pastor Amos Dele Dada PhD; P. Eng

“Then the Lord said to Moses, “Return to Pharaoh and make your demands again. I have made him and his officials stubborn so I can continue to display my power by performing miraculous signs among them. You will be able to tell wonderful stories to your children and grandchildren about the marvellous things I am doing among the Egyptians  to prove that I am the Lord.” Ex 10:1-2

When God said “let us create man in our own image and likeness” we always thought about big things – like ability to co- create. The wisdom to dominate the earth especially through industrial revolution, the wisdom of high tech in making aircraft etc. I just found out that we are like God in the ability to be humorous. God has humour . He smiles, he laughs. That is why we are able to. It is funny to know that he laughs against His enemies when his enemies thinks they are smart.

“Why do the nations conspire and the peoples’ plot in vain? The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed, saying,” Let us break their chains and throw off their shackles. The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them.” Psalm 2:1-4.

Humour is the quality of being amusing or comic, especially as expressed in literature or speech. You use “humor me” when you’re asking someone to do something for you just to keep you happy.

Read Ex 10:1-2 again. God said he will harden the heart of Pharaoh so that he will continue to display his power in performing miraculous signs to destroy Pharaoh and his cohorts by, so doing he will be having fun and as well as showing his sovereignty! Moreover, you will have stories to tell your children. Can you imagine someone destroying cars and aeroplanes just to show his children he has money and can buy another one and for the children to be able to tell others my dad is so rich he has planes and he can destroy them so that I can tell you this story! The Yorubas will say- eni ba ju ni lo, loun fo wo eni gba ni le nu. Meaning the one stronger than you can use your hands to slap your face. That is how sovereign our God is.

What the Holy Spirit is saying is that he wants you and I to trust Him to fight our battles. That he has unimaginable powers. That he created the heavens and the earth. That he has plans for his children to get to where he wants them to be. That as a child of God you are not only untouchable by the enemies of God you are also unstoppable.

Let me stretch God’s humour further. In Ex 11 he said with just one more miracle Pharaoh will let you go- what is the miracle- he will kill all the firstborn of Egyptians human beings and beasts. Read this: “But among the Israelites, it will be so peaceful that not even a dog will bark. Then you will know that the Lord makes a distinction between the Egyptians and the Israelites” Ex 11:7.

The question is what is the purpose of God’s humour- to help you to appreciate his love for his covenant children, that he has ability to fight for them, care for them, and defend them.

It’s like the storyline of movies- you build the main actors up, they have so many enemies but they always prevail! Watch the Terminator with Arnold Schwarzenegger displaying his biceps, muscles and skills! Maybe that was 20th-story movie, let me refer you to another recent movie. “Abejoye” by Mount Zion Ministry with Mike Bamiloye as the main actor. He calls God his defender. “Jeeeeeesu Olayiotan Abejoye, sanu fun mi.” These were the words muttered by Abejoye, a one-time evil genius who had encountered Christ and was now born again, after an evil attack by Oloye Oluoje. God had fun destroying all the enemies of Abejoye – because he changed his ways and decided to make Jesus his Lord and Saviour.

In May 1981, I was a Chemical Engineering student at Great Ife. I drove a Volkswagen Beetle loaned to me by a cousin and with two other cousins we were travelling from Ile- Ife to Abeokuta for the weekend when I was  arrested by Road Safety Corps for overspeeding. As students we initially took it for a joke but when they took my drivers license and all the vehicle particulars and charged me to court I knew I was in big trouble. We refused to offer a bribe. It was a Friday. On Saturday morning the scripture that God gave me during my quiet time was Romans 8:31-33 “What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies”

I jumped up and told all my friends this is what I will use to get my papers back! Who can lay any charge to God’s elect? I am one of God’s elect. I returned to Ife. I went to the altar at CAC Bethel, Ede road. I prayed “O Lord show them in that court that I am your child and you are my defender”

Court date arrived, and I was told I will have to make a plea. Guilty or not guilty? I was in a great dilemma. If I plead guilty I will have a criminal record against my name, go to prison or pay a fine. If I don’t plead guilty they will go on to full trial, no one knows what the end might be! Besides,  this is the month of my final exams for a five-year course. Dangerous options! Ahead of me, many students were convicted by the judge. My time came in the dock “ Amos Dele Dada against the Federal Government of Nigeria on 9th of May….“ the prosecutor read all the charges- but before he could get to guilty or not guilty, the judge interrupted him – “what is the number of the vehicle he was driving?” The man searched frantically- “My Lord I will get back to you on that”- was his reply. The judge asked two more times -he searched within all the documents he could not find it. The miracle is that he has this paper right in front of him yet he could not see it!

The judge said – “I cannot convict a person driving an unknown vehicle, Mr Amos Dele Dada you are hereby discharged and acquitted”! I recall vividly the police orderly that was taking the guilty ones to prison or pay their fines brought me out of the dock and said “ Young man you have a God you are serving – keep it on” I have kept that advice.

Conclusion: God has humour against His enemies. God did it for me 41 years ago so that I can tell the stories not only to my children and grandchildren but to you my reader. Be on the side of God today and watch God humorously  display his power against your enemies. I am a witness, you too can be!

Shalom!
