South Sudan and South Africa have come together to promote collaborative efforts for peace in Sudan, the nation where Africa’s youngest republic seceded in 2011.
The deal was agreed during a summit in Pretoria, South Africa, amid aggravated military activity and tensions between Sudan’s armed forces and the paramilitary rapid response force.
Deng Dau, South Sudan’s acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation expressed his happiness with the meeting, and called it a successful mission that demonstrated the two countries’ willingness to improve “mutual political relations” and “promote global security.”
He said: “The visit of His Excellency President Salva Kiir to South Africa was a successful mission. It was a peace mission that allowed the two leaders to discuss the situation in Sudan and devise ways the continent and the international community can contribute to finding a solution. Thus, the President of South Africa, His Excellency Cyril Ramaphosa, and President Salva Kiir have agreed to mobilize joint support for peace in Sudan. They also call upon ‘all parties to the conflict to ‘scrupulously observe international humanitarian law.’”
The collaboration between South Sudan and South Africa marks is an important milestone in the pursuit of peace in Sudan. The two nations know the complex dynamics of Sudan’s challenges and are determined to play an active role in finding lasting solutions. Through diplomatic engagement, dialogue, and mediation efforts, both countries aim to create an enabling environment that promotes peace, stability, and reconciliation in Sudan. By leveraging their regional influence and fostering cooperation among stakeholders, they hope to tackle the major causes of conflicts and pave way for a peaceful and prosperous future for Sudan.
