Vincent Magwenya, the spokesman for Cyril Ramaphosa, the President of South Africa, has stated that the country is aware of its legal obligations concerning Russian President Vladimir Putin’s arrest warrant.
Putin will visit South Africa in August for a BRICS summit where Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa hold talks. Magwenya stated that the government is mindful of its legal obligations and is actively liaising with various relevant stakeholders leading up to the summit.
South Africa has not spoken against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but the international court’s ruling has placed the country in a difficult situation. In spite of this, Magwenya reiterated South Africa’s strong commitment and desire to see the conflict in Ukraine resolved through peaceful negotiations.
Putin’s international arrest warrant was issued by Ukraine over the annexation of Crimea in 2014. It is unlikely that the warrant will be enforced in South Africa as the country’s constitution prohibits arresting a serving Head of State.
