Some practical life skills every parent must teach their children

Some practical life skills every parent must teach their children

In recent times, some parents have mostly concerned themselves with providing the basic needs of their children and sending them to school. To some parents, once they are able to do this, they have played their roles properly as parents.

While this is laudable, it is also important to equip your children with the necessary life skills to thrive in this ever-changing world.

The world has evolved beyond just going to school and having paper certificate. There are essential skills that will help your child to thrive if properly inculcated in them. Below are some important life skills that every parent should prioritize teaching their children:

Household chores

Lack of proper training when it comes to household cleanliness is the reason many adults these days don’t know how to tidy up after themselves or show concern for keeping their living space clean. It is even sad that some parents see house chores as the girl-child duties hence they exact so much effort in teaching their daughters to handle all the housework and assign them kitchen duties, while their sons are allowed to play and roam around freely.

It’s imperative to equip your child with basic skills for maintaining a clean and organised home, regardless of their gender. Boys and girls alike should be capable of cooking, doing laundry, cleaning, and other household chores.

Cooking and meal preparation

Cooking is a survival skill, and it is important to involve your child in the kitchen. Your children certainly look back someday and thank you for teaching them how to cook. Whether your boy or girl child, you must be deliberate in teaching them how to make good meals. This skill will help them take charge of their food choices and become self-sufficient in the kitchen as adults.

Driving and road safety

At the appropriate time, parents should teach their children, regardless of gender, the rules of the road, safe driving practices, and how to handle various traffic situations. Make sure they understand the importance of defensive driving and responsible behaviour behind the wheel.  Driving is not only convenient but also for safety.

Basic financial management

Teach your child that setting aside money for later can bring them rewards and security. Teach them the basics of budgeting, delayed gratification, saving, and making responsible financial choices. Doing this will help them to develop good financial habits that will benefit them in future.

The native tongue

You may want to argue this but teaching your child to speak their native language from a very young age not only gives them a strong sense of identity but also helps them stand out. Grounding children in their heritage from an early age helps create a sense of identity and familiarity with their roots that carries into adulthood.

Bible says train your child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
