Six-year-old Nigerian dies weeks after his family relocated to Canada

Just a month after immigrating to Canada, a Nigerian couple is mourning the death of their six-year-old son, who was removed from life-support at the Health Sciences Centre recently.

The boy, Bukunmi Babayemi, did not regain consciousness after he was seen floating in the outdoor swimming pool recently at the Valley Gardens townhouse complex, a place the family moved into two weeks earlier.

According to report, the boy who was the eldest of the couple’s children was left under the care of a trusted neighbor at the Concord Gardens complex at Concordia Avenue while his parents were running errands.

The family relocated to Canada as landed immigrants last month and had been slowly settling down in Winnipeg. Parishioners at a church attended by the family offered support and visited the parents at the hospital during the two-week vigil.

Residents at the complex tried to save the boy’s life before the arrival of paramedics.

While recounting what happened, 17-year-old Jude Jacquett said: “At first I saw a whole bunch of people outside running around screaming. I went to go check what it was outside and suddenly just started seeing someone doing CPR… really fast.

 “Everyone was freaking out.”

Winnipeg Police Service said the tragedy is being investigated, standard practice whenever a child suffers life-threatening injuries or death. Investigators say it is still being treated as a medical incident.
