Should children get COVID vaccines? What the science says

(NC) It’s natural for parents to have questions about COVID-19 vaccines for their children.

As of January 15th, over 1.4 million children 5 to 11 in Canada have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, which will help prevent them from developing serious illnesses. As the COVID-19 vaccine is used more widely in children in many countries around the world, new and reassuring information about its safety is becoming available.

If you have questions about your child receiving a COVID-19 vaccination, a good place to start is to understand what the scientists and health experts are saying about COVID-19 infection in kids: they can still get sick, have serious consequences, spread the illness to others and experience longer-term health effects from COVID-19. Those with certain underlying medical conditions may even be at increased risk for severe illness. Side effects of the vaccines in children are usually mild and disappear within a few days.

COVID-19 vaccines help the body fight off the virus so that, if they contract the virus, the vaccinated person is more likely to experience only a mild illness or nothing at all.

Another important aspect health experts suggest considering when deciding to vaccinate against COVID-19 is your children’s mental health, which may have been negatively impacted after so much change and isolation. By getting your child fully vaccinated, you can help them get back to, and keep them in, the activities they love and need for their well-being and development.
