Canada has agreed to pay the sum of C$2.8 billion ($2.09 billion) to settle a class-action lawsuit requesting compensation for the loss of language and culture filed by Indian residential schools.

The agreement amplifies on the 2021 Gottfriedson Day Scholars settlement, which provided individual compensation to day scholars that attended a residential school but did not reside on campus.
As part of the class settlement, Canada will offer the settlement amount to an independent non-profit trust.
According to the government, the organization in charge of disbursing the trust will be governed by a permanent board of nine indigenous directors.
The Federal Court has not approved the terms of the settlement.
