Senators, Panthers rack up 167 penalty minutes in a game fraught with tension

In a highly charged game, the Ottawa Senators and Florida Panthers amassed a total of 167 penalty minutes during the Panthers’ commanding 5-0 victory.

The spark for the escalating tensions occurred at the conclusion of the second period when Panthers’ Matthew Tkachuk and Senators’ goalie Jonas Korpisalo exchanged heated words as they left the ice. Tkachuk and Travis Hamonic were penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct, each receiving four minutes.

The intensity heightened further five minutes into the third period when Senators’ forward Zack MacEwen was issued a five-minute match penalty for a hit to Tkachuk’s head. This incident unfolded near the penalty boxes, following Tkachuk’s hit on Hamonic. MacEwen’s hit, executed with his elbow, was followed by continued punching while Tkachuk was on the ice. Senators’ coach DJ Smith expressed his disappointment, stating, “You don’t give yourself a chance to win, and you can’t play like that in the NHL.”

Initially flagged for elbowing, MacEwen’s penalty was revised to a head hit after review. MacEwen had previously received a one-game suspension in 2021 for kneeing Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse.

The drama persisted as Tkachuk engaged in a fight with Senators’ defenseman Jake Sanderson halfway through the third, resulting in Tkachuk receiving an additional two-minute minor for roughing. Shortly after, Senators’ captain Brady Tkachuk incurred a cross-checking penalty. Following his penalty, a breakaway by Brady Tkachuk ended with a collision with Panthers’ goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, triggering a line brawl. All 10 skaters involved were handed 10-minute misconducts by the officials.

Senators forward Claude Giroux expressed frustration, saying, “It’s really tough to say right now because a lot of things happened tonight. It’s frustrating because we know we can be better. We definitely need to figure things out.”

The contentious atmosphere persisted, with Mathieu Joseph and Sam Bennett receiving 10-minute misconducts after exchanging words at the conclusion of the penalty-filled match. This clash echoes a similar penalty-laden encounter between the two teams on April 6 of the previous season, where they accumulated 166 penalty minutes in a 7-2 victory for the Panthers.

Reflecting on the heated game, Panthers coach Paul Maurice remarked, “Sometimes hockey can get like that, that’s part of why the game is so great. Because it’s graceful and beautiful and physical and angry all at the same time. It’s probably good for both teams; you get to make it part of the story of your year.”
