Russia has officially launched a protest after Canada’s U.N. envoy, Bob Rae, referred to a murdered Russian blogger as “a vitriolic propagandist” and a hate-monger.
In a statement, Russia’s foreign ministry said a senior Canadian Diplomat has been summoned to raise strong objections to Rae’s comments, calling them “yet another manifestation of the Russophobia being fomented in Canada.”
Vladlen Tatarsky, who backed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, died in a bomb blast in St. Petersburg recently. Rae made his remarks after the United Nation’s mission of Russia talked about lack of reaction from Western media outlets and international organizations to Tatarsky’s death.

Canadian government, led by Justin Trudeau, is one of Ukraine’s most vocal supporters. While responding to Russia’s U.N. mission, Rae tweeted: “He was not a ‘journalist’. He was a vitriolic propagandist, a spreader of hate and misinformation with a criminal record. Russian journalists are either in exile or in jail.”
Russian investigators have charged Darya Trepova, a 26-year-old St. Petersburg resident, with terrorist offenses in connection with the murder of Tatarsky. Also, the blast injured 42 others, according to Russia’s health ministry.
