In a surprising and heartfelt statement, Portuguese football sensation Cristiano Ronaldo has announced that his long-standing rivalry with Argentine maestro Lionel Messi has come to an end.
Ronaldo, who made the remark recently while addressing a press conference before training with the national side at Oeiras, on the outskirts of Lisbon, ahead of European Championship qualifiers, said the “rivalry is over”.
It is no news that both Messi and Ronaldo stayed at the top of the football chain for 15 years, dating back to when Ronaldo won his first Ballon d’Or in 2008 and Messi his first in 2009.
Besides the Portuguese and Argentine, there have been only two others to lift the most coveted individual trophy in football since then – Luka Modric in 2018 and Karim Benzema in 2022.
The Al Nassr striker said, “I don’t see things like that; the rivalry is over. It was a healthy rivalry, and the spectators liked it a lot.
“Whoever likes Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t have to hate Messi and vice versa, because they are both very good. We’ve done well; we have changed the history of football, and we’ll keep on doing it. We are respected all over the world; that’s the most important thing.
“He makes his way; I make mine, even if we’re playing outside Europe. From what I’ve seen, he has done well, and so have I. It’s about continuing; the legacy continues.
“I’ve said there’s no rivalry. We’ve shared the stage for 15 years, and we ended up being — I wouldn’t say friends — because I never dined with him. We are professional colleagues, and we respect each other.”
The rivalry between Ronaldo and Messi has been one of the most captivating storylines in the world of football for over a decade. They have competed for the title of the world’s best player year after year, breaking numerous records and amassing an incredible number of individual and team achievements along the way.
Ronaldo and Messi first faced off in La Liga when Ronaldo played for Real Madrid, and Messi for Barcelona. Their battles on the pitch became legendary, captivating fans around the world and dividing opinion on who was the better player.
While their clubs will undoubtedly compete fiercely in various competitions, it appears that the personal rivalry between Ronaldo and Messi has evolved into a more friendly and mutual admiration.
The footballing world will undoubtedly miss the intense rivalry between these two titans, but it seems that the mutual respect and sportsmanship displayed by Ronaldo and Messi throughout their careers will be remembered just as fondly.
Football fans around the globe can now look forward to a new era in the beautiful game, with these two legends continuing to dazzle the world with their extraordinary talents, but in a different context – one that is perhaps defined by cooperation rather than rivalry.
