Quebec’s Minister for Public Security has said a coroner would investigate the death of Mexican boxer Jeanette Zacarias Zapata, who died after a recent bout in Montreal.
Geneviève Guilbault condoled with the family of 18-year-old Zapata, who died recently in a hospital from injuries she suffered when she fought with Quebecer Marie-Pier Houle.

Guilbault disclosed via a tweet that the coroner’s office would investigate the causes and circumstances of Zapata’s death.
Event organizer, Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM) declared Zapata had died in hospital in the presence of her husband, Jovanni Martinez.
The incident happened after the fourth round in a fight presented as part of a gala arranged by GYM at Montreal’s IGA Stadium.
Houle posted on Facebook that she was left devastated by Zapata’s death and sent her condolences to her family and her husband.
Zapata encountered a series of power punches in the corner of the ring and after a powerful uppercut, she looked stunned. A final right hook made Zapata’s mouthguard fly out and she was unable to go back to her corner after the bell rang.
She appeared to convulse while standing but was joined by Martinez, who was also her trainer. Martinez quickly laid her down in the ring.
The on-site medical team rushed to attend to her and she was immobilized on a stretcher before she was rushed to the hospital by an ambulance.
