Provincial Premiers in Canada are set to assemble in Winnipeg for their annual summer meeting, where they will talk about utilizing the new federal funding promised by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
After years of demanding increased healthcare funding, the premiers will discuss how to tackle issues like understaffed hospitals, emergency room closures, surgical backlogs, and healthcare worker shortages.
Though the recent $46 billion federal healthcare deal is falling short of their initial requests, it has been accepted by the provinces. Health care will dominate the agenda on the first day of the meeting, with affordability and economic concerns also on the table.
Provinces are expected to compare notes before submitting their individual plans to the federal government, detailing how the new funding will enhance healthcare services. The funding comes with the provinces’ requirement to establish targets and timelines that exhibit access and care improvement. While all jurisdictions encounter face similar challenges, the plans will be tailored to solve the specific needs and unique circumstances of each province.
