Arizona Governor’s Press Secretary, Josselyn Berry, has resigned following a tweet which seemed to support violence against “transphobes.” The tweet featured a photo of a woman with two guns and was posted on the day of a tragic school shooting in Nashville, Tennessee.
The viral tweet showed a GIF from the movie “Gloria” with the caption, “Us when we see transphobes.” According to Axios Phoenix, the tweet was in response to another user that commented on transphobia in the community.
The office of Governor Hobbs issued a statement stating that she does not condone violence and that mutual respect is prioritized by the administration in all interactions.
The statement added that Berry’s tweet is not a reflection of the values of the administration and that Hobbs had accepted her resignation.
The controversial tweet synchronized with a deadly shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville, where three staff and three children died. The shooter, a 28-year-old former student, has been identified as Audrey Hale. However, there has been some uncertainty in respect of Hale’s gender identity, with Nashville police spokesperson Kristin Mumford disclosing that Hale “was assigned female at birth” but used male identities on social media profile.
