A Nigerian lady, Miss Precious Ademokun, has revealed that a Canadian college, George Brown College, has refused to refund the part-payment of the school fees she transferred into the school’s account.
This happened despite the fact that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) had refused her a study visa after months of waiting.
While speaking with CBC News, Ademokunexplained that after George College offered her admission into a programme in April 2022, she deposited CAD8,867 for the first semester fees out of the total of CAD16,872 for the two semesters.
She applied for a student visa on July 4 having been informed that “the visa application process could take six to eight weeks.”

However, after waiting for months for her study permit application to be granted, she was denied a student visa and the college also refused to refund her money.
She said: “I’m very disappointed and sad.”
Ademokun contacted the college on September 19 as the IRCC’s decision on her study permit application was not forthcoming but she had already missed the deadline for a refund.
She received a decision from the IRCC that her study permit had been denied on October 6.
George Brown College later informed her that it could no longer refund any of the fees she paid to the school.
She submitted an appeal but the school did not budge and gave an explanation in a letter sent to her on December 15.

In the letter, the college explained that her appeal to withdraw her part-payment of $8,962 was not granted because she didn’t meet up with the deadline date.

CBC however contacted the school’s registrar, Janene Christiansen, and she replied in a statement that the college values its international students and understands “it is always a huge disappointment when study permits are denied.
She added: “The school is ‘following up directly’ with Ademokun to ‘find a resolution.’”
“Now that new information is coming to light, we are following up directly with the individual to gather more details and find a resolution.”
The Registrar explained further that George Brown College operates an international withdrawal and refund policy like other colleges in Ontario and abides by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities directives, as well as the regulations of IRCC.
