Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa has resigned in the wake of a corruption investigation involving his chief of staff, Vitor Escaria, who was detained.
The probe is centered around lithium and hydrogen projects. Costa, addressing the nation from Lisbon, maintained his innocence but stated, “In these circumstances, I have presented my resignation to the president of the republic.”
The investigation, focusing on lithium exploration concessions and a hydrogen production project, resulted in the detention of five individuals, including Escaria. Costa, in office since 2015, led a Socialist government with an absolute parliamentary majority.
The Supreme Court is examining the involvement of suspects in illicit activities allegedly connected to the prime minister, and key figures like the minister of infrastructure and the head of the environmental agency have also been named as suspects.
President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is expected to accept Costa’s resignation.
