In Adamawa State, North-East Nigeria, a 20-year-old woman, Amina Hassan, has been apprehended by the police for reportedly setting fire to her husband’s house just five weeks into their marriage.
The incident occurred in the Shuware neighborhood, Mubi, within the jurisdiction of Mubi North Local Government Area.
Hassan stands accused of reducing her husband’s residence to ashes, citing his failure to uphold an alleged divorce agreement that was reached before the marriage took place.
She claimed that they had agreed on a prenuptial understanding that he would divorce her two to three weeks into the marriage, but he did not honor the agreement.
“I was forced into the marriage, and before the wedding, we agreed that he would divorce me after two to three weeks into the marriage, but he reneged on the agreement. I had initially agreed to the marriage, but weeks to the wedding day, I told my parents I was no longer interested and explained why,” Hassan stated, emphasizing that she did not harbor any love for her husband.
Despite her reservations, Hassan alleged that she was compelled to marry against her wishes. The Adamawa State Police Command, acting on the directive of Commissioner of Police Afolabi Babatola, has arrested Hassan in connection with the incident.
The State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Suleiman Nguroje, confirmed the arrest and the charges against Hassan for the alleged crime.
