In a disturbing turn of events, a steward from Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), Muntazir Mehdi, has disappeared without a trace from his hotel in Toronto, Canada. Mehdi arrived in Toronto on flight PK-798 from Lahore and lodged at a hotel with his fellow crew members. The issue came to light after he failed to report for his duty on a return flight to Pakistan.
After his disappearance, the airline management and Canadian immigration authorities were informed of the situation. Unfortunately, the disappearance is not an isolated incident, as it has been reported that four other air hostesses and flight attendants from the national carrier had entered Canada previously and opted not to return, maybe to acquire citizenship.
This is not the first time PIA crew members will disappear during a layover in Toronto. Since 2018, there have been four such incidents. In 2018, 2020, and 2021, PIA flight attendants “vanished” during their layovers in Toronto and failed to show up for their return flights. As a result, PIA took a position to change protocols in an effort to prevent this issue from reoccurring.

The airline suggested holding onto crew passports during layovers and telling hotel security to make sure crews check-in and stay. Whether these protocols were implemented or not is unclear, but even if they were implemented, they have not completely mitigated the issue.
These disappearances have grave implications for the individuals involved, the airline and the wider aviation industry. They raise questions about security measures, employee vetting processes, and the responsibilities of airlines for their staff while abroad.
For the individuals that disappear, they face disciplinary action and dismissal, as well as likely legal consequences from immigration authorities in Pakistan and Canada. Also, such incidents damage the reputation of PIA as a reliable carrier and could potentially affect its international operations.
