Over $1 million in damages as fire guts Hamilton’s August 8 restaurant

A multiple-alarm fire at August 8 restaurant on Upper James Street overnight has caused more than $1 million in damages.

More than twelve fire trucks and two aerial trucks responded to the scene of the inferno at the one-storey building situated north of the Lincoln Alexander Parkway, recently.

In a news release, Chief Dave Cunliffe said the first fire crews that came to the scene met heavy smoke and flames emanating from the roof area at the front of the restaurant, which specializes in sushi and dim sum.

The fire was instantly upgraded to a second alarm which brought resources from across the city.

Steve Welton, Assistant Deputy Chief, said:  “Firefighters immediately began fighting and extinguishing the fire.”

Also, he said two members of staff of the restaurant had already left the building before the fire crew showed up and that “no one was inside.”

According to the release, close to one-third of the roof collapsed at the early stage of the incident. This prompted firefighters to concentrate on the building’s exterior.

Cunliffe said: “This was a well-involved fire that was advancing through the attic and roof area of the building.”

Also, he said in the release that the fire was controlled within 45 minutes or so.

The Office of the Fire Marshal has been informed about the incident but the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Cunliffe said the restaurant “sustained significant damage including structural collapse.”

Damages are believed to be over $1 million.
