Oshoba Makes History as First Nigerian Female Boxer to Secure World Title

Elizabeth Oshoba has etched her name into history as the first female Nigerian boxer to secure a world title. The World Boxing Council silver featherweight champion achieved this milestone with a resounding (6-0-1) victory over Italy’s Michela Braga in a bout held in Copenhagen, ultimately claiming the WBC silver featherweight title.

Oshoba’s triumph extends her professional record to seven consecutive wins, including a fourth career knockout.

Notably, she handed Braga her first-ever professional defeat, showcasing her prowess in the ring. In a standout performance, Oshoba floored Braga in round eight before delivering a decisive knockout blow in round 10.

The 24-year-old boxer, basking in the glory of her historic achievement, expressed her elation and immediately set her sights on securing the main WBC belt.

Oshoba shared her excitement, stating, “Yes, of course, I feel on top of the world. I am very happy with this title; it is my first (world) title, but I am still focused, and I can’t wait to fight more world title fights and claim the main WBC belt.”

Oshoba had previously won a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The Interim President of the Nigeria Boxing Federation, Azania Omo-Agege, praised Oshoba for her remarkable victory, expressing confidence in her championship caliber.

Omo-Agege stated, “I am not surprised that Oshoba became a champion; she has always been one, and I have always regarded her as a champion too. I was very happy when I saw that she claimed the WBC silver title. She is one of our best athletes in Nigeria, and I wish her good luck for the future.”

This achievement comes on the heels of Oshoba’s recent success, as she secured the IBO female super-featherweight title in November by defeating Martina Righi via unanimous decision. Elizabeth Oshoba’s stellar performances mark her as a rising star in the world of boxing, bringing pride and recognition to Nigerian sports.
