Ontario Health Minister Sylvia Jones has revealed that the province is spending $25 million to establish a Black health and social services hub in Peel Region.
While making the revelation, Jones said the hub could open as early as next summer and would connect people to a team of primary care, mental health, and social service professionals.
She said healthcare services at the hub will include maternal and infant health, chronic disease prevention and management, seniors’ health and wellness and mental health supports, with a special focus on diseases that affect Black communities disproportionately like sickle cell disease.
Around 20 percent of the members of Ontario’s Black communities live in Peel Region.
The minister said the hub was designed in part by residents, as well as the Black Health Alliance, Roots Community Services, Partners Community Health, the LAMP Community Health Centre and Ontario Health.
Charmaine Williams, the associate minister of women’s social and economic opportunity, said that race-based data revealed that Black communities are disproportionately affected by diabetes, cancer and other health issues, and the hub will help them navigate the system to access preventative care.
