Ontario Housing Minister, Steve Clark has been under growing pressure to resign since the integrity commissioner of the province discovered that he contravened ethics rules in connection with the Greenbelt scandal, in which some developers stand to make billions of dollars.
The commissioner recommended that Clark be sanctioned over failure to oversee the process in which some Greenbelt lands were chosen for housing development.
After the report, there were many calls for Clark to step down from political opponents, residents, and indigenous leaders.
Clark turned to social media on Labour Day to announce his resignation and said he realized his presence would only create further distraction from the important work that needs to be done on the housing file.
Opposition leaders like Marit Stiles of NDP say Clark finally did the right thing, but the issue is not over.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford defended Clark by saying he had confidence in his team to attain the goal of constructing 1.5 million homes in 10 years. Ford accepted the resignation and appreciated Clark for his years of service in cabinet.
Meanwhile, opposition leaders still demand that the legislature be recalled, the RCMP probe and the Greenbelt land be returned.
