The Progressive Conservative government of Ontario has pledged to increase the minimum wage by 50 cents after the provincial election.
Labour Minister, Monte McNaughton made the announcement recently and said the wage increase would be effected in early fall.
This development would bring Ontario’s minimum wage to $15.50 per hour on October 1.
The minimum wage was increased from $14.35 per hour to $15 per hour in January. The same wage was implemented for liquor servers and app-based platform gig workers.
The Minister said the increase would help workers cope with rising costs amid inflation.
He said: “This eight percent increase in one year will help workers keep up with rising inflation. It’s one more way we are fighting for everyday people and delivering real positive change for over 700,000 workers.”
The Progressive Conservatives revealed that the planned increase in the minimum wage is connected to the Consumer Price Index and will continue to go up every fall based on Ontario’s inflation.
According to Officials, employees that are being paid minimum wage while working 40 hours a week, will witness a pay rise of $1,768.
