The Ekiti State House of Assembly has said the former Ekiti State Governor, Segun Oni, is not being probed over any allegation of mismanagement of public funds while he presided over the state.
The lawmakers added that the query about Oni, submitted by its Public Accounts Committee as part of the 2015 reports by the state’s auditor-general, was quashed for lack of evidence concerning the misuse of public funds.
In a statement signed by the Chairman, House Committee on Information, Samuel Omotoso, the House disassociated itself from earlier reports in the media that the ex-governor was indicted by the 2015 reports for alleged misuse of funds belonging to the state.
Omotoso noted that the Ekiti assembly was a respectable institution that would not act on an issue without letting the matter go through due diligence.
“We can confirm that the (Ekiti) House of Assembly sat on Thursday, October 19 and adopted the 2015 reports of the Public Accounts Committee and nowhere was an indictment found or documented against the former governor of Ekiti State, His Excellency, Segun Oni. The house has no pecuniary interest other than that of the people of Ekiti State and hence, will not cry foul where there is none. Oni has no case to answer,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, has called on the Federal Government to set up a special fund to develop private universities in Nigeria.
Adeyemi spoke at the 2017 convocation of the Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, on Saturday.
Oba Adeyemi said, “With what Chief Babalola has done in this university, nothing is too big for the Federal Government to do for a private university of this stature. This university is exemplary in learning and character. It is moulding Nigeria’s future leaders in the best fashion and I believe it won’t be out of place for the Federal Government to give special intervention funds to private universities.”
Babalola, in his speech, said the university would continue to provide functional education in the country.
