Over the last couple of weeks, the Nigerian media space has been agog with the announcement of the death of veteran Yoruba actor, Mukaila Adedigba popularly known as Sikiru Adeshina. While the movie industry, as well as the nation mourned, the sudden death of veteran Nollywood actor, Obinna Nwafor aka Saint Obi, broke out, eliciting further despair. The actor died at the age of 57 in Jos, Plateau State after a long battle with illness.
He was born on November 16, 1965 and started his acting career in 1996. He appeared in movies and TV series including Sakobi, Candle Light, Heart of Gold, Festival of Fire and Last Fire.
Destiny Etiko expressed shock at his death and wrote, “Jesus.”
Kenneth Nwadike described the late Obi as his uncle, “Thank you all for your prayers. My uncle was a good man, and he will be missed. Now I have to continue the legacy for our family and I pray I make the impact he made as an actor. God rest your soul”.
Announcement about his demise was delayed because of disagreement among his siblings.
Not long after his death, the news of the death of popular Yoruba actor, Murphy Afolabi, came to light, much to the utter shock of Nigerians. Afolabi reportedly died after he sustained injuries from a bathroom fall in the early hours of May 14. His colleague, Adekola Tijani, spoke at the funeral, saying that the actor died on the way to the hospital.
A filmmaker and president of the guild of Yoruba movie directors, Seun Olaiya, made the news public via WhatsApp of filmmakers. The news was corroborated by the MD of the popular movie marketing company, Abdullahi Abdulrasaq.
“I swear to God just before the news, I was still hailing him. This is really a rude shock to me.”
Seun Oloketuyi, convener of the Best Nollywood Awards, also confirmed the news.
“It is true. He passed away after taking a fall in his bathroom at his house in Ikorodu this morning.”
Filmmaker, Tunde Ola-Yusuf, posted a picture of the deceased actor on Facebook and quoted, “Rest in peace. May God give the family and close associates the fortitude to bear the loss. Good night, Murphy Afolabi.”
Hours after the funeral of Afolabi, Nollywood actress, Wunmi Olowokandi, was announced dead. The cause of death has not been made public.
Chikezie Uwazi died in America. Actress Obey Etok Chima announced his demise via her Facebook page on Sunday, stating that Uwazie died in the US after a second brain surgery. Sound Engineer, Techno Sound, recently died.
All these spates of death have caused movie stars, celebrities, politicians and fans to send hordes of tributes to the deceased actors and actresses.
