A rising star in the track and field event, Favour Ofili has been named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Athlete of the Week. She achieved this feat after she broke the collegiate record in the 200-meter dash recently.

Ofili is in year two with LSU track and field and she has carved a niche for herself at only 19. She is a three-time U20 world medalist who came into last weekend’s Tom Jones Memorial meet in Gainesville, Fla., with a record of 22.23 in the 200 meters which she ran at the 2021 IAAF U20 World Championships to get a bronze medal. In her first outdoor 200 meter race after that meet in August of 2021, she blazed around half the track in a collegiate record and set a time of 21.96 seconds; this is also a 2022 world record.

In the LSU record, Ofili overtook former record holder Dawn Sowell, who had a record time of 22.04 while competing for LSU in 1989 and Florida’s Kyra Jefferson who ran a 22.02 at the NCAA Championships in 2017.
Also, the 21.96 has earned Ofili the qualification standard for the 2022 IAAF World Championships which will take place in Eugene, Oregon later in the year.
