New Zealand Clarifies Position Amid Canada-India Diplomatic Row Over The Killing Of Nijjar

The government of New Zealand, led by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Winston Peters, has made effort to clarify its position after controversy over comments made in connection with the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. This clarification came amid escalating diplomatic tensions between Canada and India, with Canada alleging the involvement of India in Nijjar’s death.

While responding to the controversy caused by Peters’ interview with an Indian media outlet, the New Zealand Foreign Ministry released a statement emphasizing their position on the allegations against India has not changed. The Ministry highlighted the significance of allowing the ongoing criminal investigation to end before making any assertions.

This statement was key in addressing concerns raised by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations in the House of Commons regarding the involvement of Indian agents in Nijjar’s assassination.

The incident has strained the diplomatic relationship between India and Canada and put the spotlight on the role of other Five Eyes nations in such international disputes.

Peters’ comments, which questioned the evidence behind the allegations, show the complexities of international law and the challenges in diplomatic communications. His remarks were seen as important due to his position within a nation that is part of this influential intelligence-sharing alliance.

As the investigation into the killing of Nijjar continues, the international community is keeping a close eye. The outcome of the investigation can further influence the diplomatic ties between both countries.
