Yahoo has unveiled a series of new AI tools for Yahoo Mail, designed to enhance user convenience and cost savings, as announced on Monday. These additions involve enhancements to existing AI functions within Yahoo Mail and the introduction of a novel Shopping Saver tool. It’s important to note that Yahoo is the parent company of TechCrunch.
The freshly introduced Shopping Saver tool is devised to help users uncover forgotten gift cards, discount codes, and store credits. This tool offers suggestions for messages to vendors, simplifying the process of applying these savings after a purchase is made. Yahoo highlights that almost half of U.S. adults possess unused gift cards, vouchers, or store credits. The tool seeks to aid users in economizing when they engage in online shopping.
According to Josh Jacobson, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Yahoo Mail, the company has launched a comprehensive suite of tools within Yahoo Mail with the goal of saving users both time and money. Jacobson stated, “In total, US consumers have $23 billion in unused gift cards and credits, and we hope our new tools will help users gain a fraction of that back in their wallets.”
In addition to the introduction of the Shopping Saver tool, Yahoo Mail’s existing capabilities have also received upgrades. These upgrades are concentrated in the areas of search and writing assistance features.
The search bar within Yahoo Mail’s interface now suggests common questions to aid users in quickly locating desired information. Instead of relying solely on keywords, users can directly pose questions or choose from a selection of prompted queries aligned with their search criteria. For instance, users can ask, “how much did I spend on groceries last week?” The addition of new filters, such as “From,” “To,” and “Date,” further aids users in refining their search results.

Moreover, Yahoo Mail’s writing assistant, which generates suggested replies in the user’s own style, has expanded its capabilities. Formerly limited to professional or casual tones, the assistant now offers a range of tones to choose from, including urgent, grateful, and apologetic.
Yahoo employed Google Cloud’s AI platform to develop its generative AI features. While these AI tools were initially tested exclusively with iOS users, they are now accessible to users utilizing web browsers. While Yahoo is preparing for a wider public release of these features, a specific date for the rollout has not yet been disclosed.
This announcement aligns with the trend set by Google and Microsoft, both of which have integrated generative AI-powered features into Gmail and Outlook in recent times.
